Did you know?
When local unemployment increased directly resulting from COVID-19, we asked the question of how could we best respond to meeting the needs of those adversely affected in our community? Together with support from Work & Income, our Drive 2 Work programme has stepped up to those people registered with Work & Income to assist them in securing permanent and sustainable employment.
Employment Services Manager, Sharyn Kake says “it can be a traumatic experience when people find themselves out of work at the best of times, let alone during these current uncertain and challenging times. Becoming a job seeker creates a myriad of emotions and challenges, especially when things are totally out of the individual’s control”.
We are a long-term proven provider working with job seekers assisting them to secure employment. Work & Income and the YMCA know that this current environment requires a more bespoke and individualised response. Our recently expanded Drive 2 Work programme, funded by the Ministry of Social Development, provides us the scope for greater flexibility to meet the needs of each individual, with funding to assist each job seeker to upskill, provide job search resources and support and support them to secure permanent and sustainable employment.
“This is a crucial time to make sure that our local job seekers can get the very best careers advice and employment support”, says Keith Shaw, YMCA General Manager. Together with our already experienced Employment Services staff team, we identified quickly that we needed additional experience in this field to be able to deliver tangible outcomes at this pivotal time in people’s lives. “So we set about coaxing Lionel Wilson out of retirement”, says Keith. Lionel is well known, having recently retired from Workbridge after 17 years as an employment consultant. Lionel brings a wealth of employment placement and support experience and has strong local employer networks. Between Sharyn Kake, Julie Loffhagen, and now Lionel Wilson, our YMCA team is ready to support local job seekers registered with Work & Income into work!
